Every year, the market for heating and air conditioning contractors in the United States generates…
How to Troubleshoot AC Systems That Cycle Too Often
If the air conditioner in your Conroe home is cycling on and off frequently, or short cycling, it’s probably time to call in a professional for a thorough inspection. Your system shouldn’t turn on and off too often. This is an inefficient way for it to operate. Not only will you wear out the system, but you’ll also pay more than necessary for your utilities.
Check Your System’s Size
Though everything’s bigger in Texas, your AC system doesn’t have to be. A system that’s too big for your home will cool it down quicker than it should, shutting down and starting up frequently. An HVAC contractor can perform a Manual J calculation on your home to determine the proper size air conditioner for your square footage. If you’re having a new system installed, always insist on a Manual J calculation rather than a rule of thumb calculation to help you choose the best unit.
Look for Leaks
If your system is low on refrigerant, it won’t function properly and may stop and start often as it tries to keep your home cool. Other signs of low refrigerant include inadequate cooling and ice on the exterior unit. You can temporarily fix the problem by recharging your system, but the best solution is to have the leak permanently fixed.
See to the Sensor
If your system is turning on and off at odd times, you may have a problem with the sensor. If your AC turns off before the home is adequately cooled or turns on again even though you’re freezing, the thermostat probably needs a checkup. A professional can check and repair the wiring.
