Can Rainy, Humid Weather Damage My AC Unit? | Luxury Air Skip to main content

Many homeowners worry that certain types of weather can damage their AC units and, since AC unit repairs can be costly, it is certainly a concern.

While heavy rain is not likely going to damage your unit, strong winds can cause some headaches. When it’s windy, falling objects like tree branches can damage the unit or dent the fan grill. Other debris that gets blown around in the wind can get inside the unit as well. There are a few things you can do to protect your AC unit during a rainstorm.

Yard Work

Make sure your yard is clean and remove any objects that could be picked up by the wind and damage the condenser. Remove debris so it doesn’t block your unit.

Don’t Cover It!

Some homeowners cover the condenser with a tarp during rainy weather. This actually traps water inside the condenser and can cause the unit to rot from the inside. It also increases corrosion of the unit since the water can’t escape. A cover can also attract critters that can damage wires. The only time condensers should be covered is during cold weather when ice is present and can fall on the condenser.

Avoid Running it During a Storm

During humid rainy weather, the AC system can’t cool the home as effectively and will have to keep running longer in order to keep the home at a cooler temperature. The more the unit runs, the more maintenance it will need. Moisture from the air can get in and form along the evaporator coil, and can also get into the pan below. A lot of moisture can lead to algae inside the drain, which can cause it to clog.

Flood

The only time rainy and humid weather can be truly damaging to the AC unit is if there is a flood. If it’s possible that there could be flooding, the unit should be secured with plywood and then a cover can be added. The cover should be removed as soon as the storm is over to dry out the system.
