The average high temperatures for Texas summers are anywhere between 86º and 98º. Hot months in the Lone Star State definitely require a lot of preparation, and one of the most important things to do is get your AC in order.
Here, we’re going to talk about some home AC maintenance tasks you need to do before the next heat wave. Read on to make sure that you don’t broil soon!
1. Change the Filters
Changing your air filters every month or two is an important part of keeping your AC working right. Unfortunately, people forget to do this fairly often, which prevents the air conditioner from effectively sucking up dust and debris. You can get new filters pretty much anywhere and install them in less than a minute, so there’s no reason not to.
2. Clean the Coils
Winter is an especially wet time of year because of snow, ice, and condensation. The outside of your AC unit has been collecting this water and the gunk, dust, and mud that it brings. You need to clean the coils on the outside of the unit with a garden hose to eliminate this debris.
If the dirt and grime persist, this probably isn’t something you should DIY. Leave it to an expert who has expert tools.
3. Eliminate All Condensation
When wet winter months bring water and ice, the pipes of your air conditioner are likely to become clogged. This could lead to an AC backup in which the watery mess goes into your AC or your home. Make sure that the pipe is draining properly and wipe all condensation away before walking away.
4. Check Coolant Lines
There are refrigerant pipes on your AC that run from the evaporator to the condenser. They’re covered by a foam coolant line to stop energy loss, and if these enclosures fray or go missing, cool air won’t be condensed.
You can install foam installation sleeves that you buy online in their place. If you prefer, you can also use foam insulation tape wrapped around the pipes in a spiral configuration.
5. Call in the Pros
DIY AC repair is awesome in many cases, but it can only go so far. Eventually, you’ll need to call in HVAC maintenance professionals to take a look at your air conditioner and make sure that everything’s running smoothly.
They have the tools and knowledge to fix anything that isn’t perfect, get it clean, and ensure that you’re ready to go into summer with cool air (and won’t need an emergency repair later).
