Why Your AC Drips Skip to main content

After running all summer to keep your Conroe, Texas home cool, your AC may start to drip. Many things can cause condensation to build upon the air handler causing the AC to start dripping, and all of them mean you need professional maintenance.

Condensation in the Crawl Space

Your ducts cool down when they pump air-conditioned air through your house, and if they encounter especially hot temperatures in the attic, basement, or crawl space that will cause condensation on the outsides of your ducts. Enough condensation may form that it drips from the ductwork. If you notice condensation forming on your ducts, you should call a professional for maintenance. Condensation like this can lead to mold and other IAQ issues.

Clogged Air Filters

Clean air filters aren’t just essential to your IAQ. They actually help keep the rest of your HVAC system running as it should. If the air filters are clogged, the evaporator coil will not work properly and can cause it to ice up. When this happens, you’ll end up with too much water in your drain pan which can then overflow. You don’t need a professional to change your air filters, but you should have everything professionally checked out if your pan is overflowing.

Refrigerant Leaks

When your HVAC system is working properly, you typically don’t need the refrigerant levels changed or replaced. But if the refrigerant starts to leak, the evaporator coil could freeze, just like it does when the air filters get too clogged. That same overflow of water into the drain pan will happen, which is why you should always have any coil or water overflow problems checked by a professional. Refrigerant leaks often mean you need a new AC unit.

The components of your AC should not drip at any time. The only dripping that should occur would be from the condensate line (typically a pipe) that you’ll see on the outside of your home. This is the end of the line for the humidity that your AC pulls from your indoor air. Should you see any other dripping water, call us for a professional solution.
